As a strategic business adviser with multiple clients, I am hearing a lot of confusion about what method of marketing to use with a limited budget.  I recommend you look at  potential return on investment (ROI).  For my service-based clients digital marketing is a very good way to go. Whether you are a service like a Plumber, Roofer, Landscaper, Painter, or a Retail store, there is a good mix of traditional and digital marketing to best build your business. It’s important to understand the pros and cons of each.

Today the the traditional methods are often producing lower ROI than digital.  Here’s why:

  1. Average of 10% open rate on emails sent
  2. Direct mail marketing is hit or miss
  3. Door tags are another tradition – time consuming, also hit or miss
  4. Cold Calling – time consuming to build relationship

With Digital Marketing you get better ROI. Here’s why:

  1. Leverage your existing email list or direct mailing list and get the ads on phones, tablets, & computers directly
  2. Geo target – specific neighborhoods
  3. For cost of 1 direct mail piece, you can get in front of your ideal clients 25-50 times

Every form of advertising has its place, it usually takes a combination based on your strategy and your objectives. There is not a one size fits all, however, if you have a Landscape, Pool service, HVAC, Plumbing, Electric, etc there are some common themes that begin to surface. If you have an automotive shop, boutique, restaurant, then your strategy may be a bit different.

It’s important as a business owners you understand this at a high level in order to make the best decisions and investment for your marketing and advertising budget.
